Action Items -Tom will submit handbook to OGSR -Tom will contact Darwin, confirm 2nd years don't need NRSA by January 30th -Darwin will do an email vote via bio grad committee -Gert and Terry will work on an IGERT (pre-proposal due Feb) -David will work on an NIH (spring deadline) -Terry will work on funding with CalIT2 -Terry will give qual description to EJ so that it gets into the handbook -Philip will check it over to see if it jives with students -A travel grant policy should enter the handbook -EJ will get a official faculty list out -all faculty ever on the steering committee or currently have a student, about 24 faculty -Steering committee will elect someone to the admissions with Marla -Students who want to improve the website: contact EJ with proposal Meeting organized by SUBCOMS 1. Student Affairs - EJ + Student reps -Website is at the Salk. Links are in place. -compneuro.salk.edu -Concept: keep it simple, so we can always update it. -pretty is okay, but NEVER loose functionality, always html friendly -student website is not the "public face" -- do what we want -student section: have a simple password to access personal info, if database -how often are students elected? Once a year, summer, Reps can be re-elected, ideally staggered so that there is continuity over time. -One "junior" and one "senior" rep -Hand book is final on Dec 8th, change comment s should come before then 2. Academic - David, Massimo - Academic planning meeting is soon - if interested contact Leif or Bayle -Gert C. is taking over winter quarter -D. Kleinfeld's biophysics is revamped, linear systems will be added in -Spring: linear algebra and network models, plasticity and control systems -There are no retroactive classes imposed. (i.e. current second years will not be required to take the newly created "ideal comp sequence") -exception to course requirements should be submitted to academic committee, -comp neuro students should attend research rounds in their 1st and 2nd years, this is a requirement , if you are beyond your second year you do not retroactively have to make up classes if you didn't do them. 3. Funding- Terry, David, Pam, Gert -Gert is starting a new focus IGERT (pre: Feb, full: Aug) -Engineering, Sensing, VLSI - NIH training grant, specifically for computational neuroscience. -David is point person (RFP coming out this Friday, pre: spring) -Corporate sponsors -working with Development Office, but they may be "ineffectual" -Cal-IT2 may be a good contact, has better Development Office -No one got Microsoft fellowships, but future applications were encouraged by Microsoft 3. Budget sub committee -Previously met to plan how to allocate funds if we renewed IGERT, -Goals of funding levels, as seemed the most fair, given the resources -The spirit of what we talked about for IGERT funds will be maintained - "we want to try to meet commitments that we made, but we can't promise what we don't have" - "but we want to be fair about it when it comes in" - "IGERT level for all students is unachievable" -Q: Some 2nd year students got a letter saying that they will have old IGERT money until June. Is that true? Tom: Yes, that's actually when the $ runs out. This date is later than previously mentioned because less money was spent than expected . -The biology department will find a way to make $500 available for conference travel expenses. If a student has an outside alternate source (NSF = 300/yr) then bio will supplement up to $500. -Coming soon: One less TA required if you get a full tuition stipend 4. Quals: -Consistency of expectation for quals. Terry will adjust the quals description in the student handbook to match what will be true about quals. 5. Bootcomp - 6. Admissions - Marla (neuro rep on bio admission com), Justin + unknown CN faculty -Marla will have a co-reader for new students, this will be a comp person -Small number of students should be co-recruited with neuroscience 7. Uberstrategy -Terry & Henry -Neuroscience (Medschool) + CompNeuro (Biology; Arts and Sciences) -Old rivalries and politics lying in the background; -More formal reorganization at a higher level is more difficult. It takes time and $. But it is happening at a 2-10 year scale. 8. Communications - Pam -Pam is off the steering committee -she may be loosely associated, but not actively enrolled 9. International Program - Henry -Max Plank Institute, Germany is funding Computational neuroscience well, we have contacts to Friburg, Gottingen, Munich, Potsdam -NSF $ available for students , Friburg recommended, "organized," -Axel Borst will visit in January , 13th-14th 10. Admissions - Cathy 11. Accounting - Christy 12. Omsbudsman - Henry
